Our favourites for the summer holidays in Grindelwald

Hiking, cycling, running, climbing, tennis and (mini)golf – these are probably the most popular activities in Grindelwald during the warmer months. We also like to go outdoors in the nature and have a mountain adventure in the Jungfrau region.

Romantic Trail

The romantic trail (2 hours 15 minutes), well prepared, charming (and not too busy) from the Männlichen to the Alpiglen, impresses with its breathtaking view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and all the other surrounding mountains. The diversity of flora and fauna always makes my heart beat faster! There is much and more to admire on the meadows and pastures: Gentians, alpine roses, wild anemones, troll flowers and cotton grass, blueberries – and of course all the birds and other small animals. If you listen carefully, you can even hear the whistling of marmots. From time to time, you will be accompanied by the sound of the cowbells of the alpine cows. Just lie down and listen to nature… For me it is an opportunity to forget and start dreaming – a gift for the senses. The highlight of my hike is always the wild and romantic Swiss pine forest – a very special and colourful experience, especially in autumn. By the way, in the Swiss stone pine forest you can enjoy a delicious picnic. Dear guests, you won’t be disappointed!

Bäregg

My insider tip for a long hike in our beautiful Grindelwald valley starts not far from our hotel. With the Grindelwald-Pfingstegg cable car you can start the first stage comfortably (tickets available at the reception, discount with our guest card). If you wish, you can of course also master the ascent on foot, but it is very steep. At the top, you choose the path to Bäregg. The route runs along the Mettenberg in the direction of the lower Grindelwald Glacier. Once you reach the point where the path swings southwards over the glacier gorge, it almost feels like you are in another world. A breathtaking view of the glacier and the Fiescherhorns is guaranteed. At the Berghaus Bäregg you can take a break and enjoy the view of the glacier, the mountain and the valley. If you haven’t done enough hiking, you can continue a little further on the mountain path to the Schreckhornhütte to Bänisegg, where you can admire even more impressions of the overwhelming mountain world. Back to the Pfingstegg, the summer toboggan run and now the Fly-Line. An experience for young and old! The Pfingstegg-Bäregg and back hike takes about 2.5 hours and is easy to master for experienced hikers.

Paragliding

Floating above the clouds has always been my dream – surrounded by mountains and travelling at high speed. So it’s not surprising that my advice for the summer is a tandem flight with a paraglider. The experience starts at Grindelwald First. After a short introduction by the local pilot, after just a few steps, you will rise into the air and glide sublimely over the valley. At high altitude, you quickly forget the worries of everyday life and enjoy the beautiful view. Depending on the thermals, the flight lasts more or less long, but the experience is guaranteed. We know the paraglider pilots personally and can arrange a tandem flight for you from the reception without any extra charge.

Glecksteinhut

The hike to the Glecksteinhut on my favourite mountain, the Wetterhorn, starts at the junction of the Gleckstein. After a good 400 meters of ascent, a large building appears under the path. This is the Enge station – a perfect opportunity to take a short break and explore a piece of Swiss cable car history up close. The world’s first passenger aerial tramway was put into service here in 1908. Then you climb up the path like an ibex. Speaking of ibexes: with a bit of luck, they will accompany you from the last third of the hike. The destination of the hike thrones like an eagle’s nest above our valley at 2317m: the Glecksteinhütte. A large beer and good Älplermagronen are the reward. The hike is only recommended for experienced hikers who are not afraid of heights and lasts about 2.5 hours.

Bike tour

In the summer, I like to go hiking in the mountains with my mountain bike. I prefer to ride in the direction of Grosse Scheidegg, from there I continue in the direction of the First and ride down through Schreckfeld-Bort. Up to Grosse Scheidegg, it is best to follow the road. At the top, there is a strange crossing to Grindelwald First. Important: do not drive too fast, as grazing cows can often be on the road. The last part is then again a bit more tiring, but the effort is worth it. After a “summit rivella” in the First mountain restaurant, the route is almost always downhill.
